As the contemporary agricultural industry evolves, we’re continuing to help rural business owners and smallholders with our kit-form modular buildings. Cheap, easy to install and useful for a variety of practical applications, they’re seeing a rapid growth in popularity.
Within the UK, our most recent build was produced for Steve and Karen Reynolds; owners of the Iden Manor Farm in Staplehurst, Kent. They contacted us after deciding that in addition to the blue cheese they produce – thanks to their herd of 100 cows – they also wanted to change the way in which they process the rest of their milk.
Finding an Answer to Falling Milk Prices
A big part of the reason for this was down to the current state of the dairy industry. As milk prices paid to UK farmers have continued to fall, farmers such as Steve and Karen have been required to implement forward-thinking in order to survive.
Having started using their milk to make the blue cheese over 6 years ago, they recently reached a stage where this added-value product started to use 25% of their processed milk. This was an ideal milestone for them, as the product is extremely stable based on current retail prices; whereas with milk it fluctuates drastically due to it being a commodity.
With this is in mind; Steve, Karen and their son Frank – who has now also joined the farm – had been looking for a way to transform the rewards gained from the other 75% of their milk in a similar way. This decision was made around 4 months ago when thanks to a stroke of luck, Steve was offered the opportunity to buy some top-notch second hand equipment to pasteurise and bottle milk with.
Prefabricated Building Puts Equipment to Use
With the equipment now in hand, the next steps came as we at Create a Cabin were brought in to help Steve, Karen and Frank to put it to use. We were able to design and manufacture a building for them to use as a processing room; with the added bonus being that it could be installed within an old cow shed on the premises for a fraction of the cost of a new building.
15m x 7m, the prefab unit we produced – which includes and cold room and changing facilities – was installed within just 3 days; thanks to the help of Frank and two of his friends. It represents just the latest in a long line of success stories with our kit-form buildings; with the owners now able to process and bottle their own milk on site.
