Macknade Fine Foods and Pasture for Life to Host Kentish Hogget Supper
Macknade Fine Foods and Pasture for Life will be hosting a Kentish hogget supper on 6th May to raise awareness of pasture fed meat and hogget.
The event aims to highlight the importance of pasture fed meat as well as raise awareness of hogget, which is a sheep older than lamb but younger than mutton, usually aged between 12 and 24 months.
In January, Macknade Fine Foods’ own butchery was certified by Pasture for Life as a butcher of pasture-fed meat, becoming the only certified butcher in East Kent.
The evening will consist of a tasting of four types of hogget from four Pasture for Life certified farmers from Kent. These will be served with a selection of seasonal side dishes and a beer that has been paired especially for the event from local Kent brewery, Boutilliers.
Each farmer will discuss their hogget, how they are raised, and the effect on flavour that this has. Macknade Fine Food’s butcher, Roy Campbell, will also be speaking about why Macknade is involved with Pasture for Life and a Pasture for Life representative will be speaking about the association.
Tickets are priced at £40 and include the aforementioned hogget tasting and Boutilliers beer, in addition to a canapé, welcome drink, light dessert and tea and coffee. To book, please visit the Macknade website at www.macknade.com.
Regarding the event, Fidelity Weston, Director of the PFLA, said, “When people think of wine or cheese, there is a great association with the land and “terroir”. We are not used to thinking about that when it comes to meat, so what so interests everyone at these events is tasting the different flavours in the pasture fed hogget and realising you can really taste the terroir – the grass, the wildflowers, the soil and the land, all contribute to the flavour of that particular piece of hogget. Being able to meet the farmers and talk about how they have reared their own animals is all part of the enjoyment of the evening”.
