London Underground comes to the Kent & East Sussex Railway in Tenterden!
From today, visitors to Tenterden’s Steam Railway can see the impressive former London Transport Locomotive GWR 5786 L92 as the locomotive will be in steam daily between 3rd and 16th August.
This locomotive was one of several sold to London Transport and survived working around the LT system until steam ended at Neasden shed on the Metropolitan Line in 1971. Numbered L.92, she was painted in London Transport’s attractive lined maroon livery. She was bought straight from LT service by the Worcester Locomotive Society and spent many years at the Bulmers Railway Centre at Hereford before that site closed and the Society moved its base to the South Devon Railway.
5786 came out of service at the end of October 2011 and returned to service in March 2013 in the striking maroon livery of London Transport as No L.92, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the opening of London’s Underground in 1863, the world’s first underground railway, between Farringdon and Paddington.
Visitors to the Kent & East Sussex Railway in August can enjoy any of the 5 daily steam train departures from Tenterden Station. Journeys between Tenterden and Bodiam are great fun whatever the weather and everyone can enjoy a relaxing journey as the trains gently wend their way from Tenterden – “The Jewel of The Weald” for ten and a half miles to terminate in the shadow of the magnificent National Trust castle at Bodiam. L92 operates three daily Tenterden departures at 10.40, 1.20 and 3.40.
