The Mayor of Bromley marks arrival of fishmonger at Holwood Farm, Downe
A farm shop at Downe has celebrated the opening of a fresh fish stall with a visit from The Worshipful the Mayor of Bromley Councillor Julian Benington.
Speaking at Holwood Farm, the Mayor said: “I am delighted to see this family-owned business add to its success with the new addition of a fish stall every Friday. I am sure it will be appreciated by all their customers, particularly with the option to order and collect over the weekend.”
The collaboration with Veasey and Sons – who fish from Eastbourne harbour daily – brings fresh Sussex fish to the popular farm shop on Fridays between 10am and 2pm. Customers can expect a varied catch including crabs, scallops, mackerel and plaice.
“A fresh fish offering is something we’ve been planning for a while,” said Gary Mercer, who owns the farm shop with wife Sarah Clout. “We’re thrilled to be working with Veasey and Sons because their fish is the freshest you will buy. Dave the fishmonger is also a chef so we can’t think of anyone better to assist our customers to get the best from the catch. It has, of course, been fabulous to welcome the Mayor and Mayoress and we’re really grateful for their support.”
The Mayor was joined by the Mayoress, Mrs Valerie Benington. The couple has lived in Downe for 33 years and until 2012 ran a smallholding raising sheep, calves and chickens.
At the Fish Friday celebration, customers were invited to enjoy tastings of fish and seafood washed down with Holwood Farm’s new Sauvignon Blanc wine.
