DARTFORD’S MP went down to the farmyard to throw his support behind a campaign urging shoppers to source 10 per cent of food each week locally.
Gareth Johnson visited Stanhill Farm in Birchwood Road, Wilmington, where he met farmer Toby Williams and Ed Martin, of Produced in Kent.
Produced in Kent say if every shopper spent a cut of their budget on local produce, an extra £1.75m would be injected into Kent-based businesses.
Ed Martin from the organisation said: “The average shopper spends £55 on food and drink.
“By spending just £5.50 on delicious Kentish food and drink it would have an enormous impact on local businesses and food producers.”
Mr Johnson added: “So much of the produce available to buy is grown on the farm and the comments from the customers in the shop when I visited were testament to how delicious the locally farmed produce is.”
