Ice cream expert treats Canterbury Young Farmers to ‘behind the scenes’ dairy tour
Award-winning ice cream producer Solley’s Farms welcomed some special guests last week, when the Canterbury Young Farmers Club paid a visit for a ‘behind the scenes’ tour.
The family-run dairy based in Ripple, near Deal, opened its doors to the keen young people, providing an insight into the production of real Kentish dairy ice cream from start to finish – and of course, a tasting of the delicious end result!
Stephen Solley, managing director of Solley’s Farms, said: “It was wonderful to welcome Canterbury Young Farmers for a grand tour of the dairy, we had a cracking time! We really wanted to demonstrate the passion and care that goes into making Solley’s Farms ice cream, particularly the importance of using local ingredients.”
Solley’s Farms has been producing real Kentish dairy ice cream for almost 30 years, and is one of the largest suppliers in the region. The dairy sources 85 per cent of its base products from Kent and all of its milk from a Jersey herd on a neighbouring farm, keeping food miles to a minimum.
Stephen continued: “The provenance and quality of our ice cream is very important to us, and it was great to be able to share it with the next generation of farmers.”
The visit was part of a programme of trips to local farms by the Canterbury Young Farmers Club, designed to help its members learn about the different sides of the industry. The group is part of the National Federation of Young Farmers Clubs, which has over 23,000 members across the country between the ages of 16 and 26.
