Relive the Fabulous Forties at the Kent & East Sussex Railway

Capture the unique atmosphere of the 1940s at the Kent & East Sussex Railway in 40sTenterden on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May 2014.

This year’s event will be particularly memorable as 2014 is the 75th anniversary of the outbreak of World War Two as well as being 100 years since World War One began and 70 years since D-Day.

The weekend is an opportunity to experience wartime Britain and the forties lifestyle as the Railway turns back the clock to wartime Britain. Enjoy flying displays by iconic wartime planes – the Hurricane and Spitfire; singing by polished professionals, delivering the sound of the forties with sophistication and a splash of fun; and plenty of dancing. Vehicles and authentic costumes from the period will be on view, and a 1940s village scene with wartime cookery demonstrations. Steam trains run all weekend, and train ticket gains entry to the event and includes unlimited train travel between Tenterden and Bodiam Stations.

All the stations will have authentic memorabilia and bunting and Tenterden Station will be alive with the ‘jumpin’ and ‘jivin’ sounds of the 40s as visitors are entertained by the foot-tapping Cinque Ports Lindy Hoppers together with several indoor performances by accomplished 1940’s singers the Nightingales.

History enthusiasts can also browse a range of civilian and military vehicles, privately owned and fully restored to their former war time glory. There will even be the opportunity to look inside a recreated World War II Air Raid Anderson Shelter.

Other entertainment will include fire fighting demonstration by the Fire Service Preservation Society and trade stalls featuring custom made 40’s and 50’s clothing.

A display of wartime kitchen memorabilia, cooking displays and interesting exhibits from nearby Lashenden Air Museum add to the atmosphere.

Visitors can also take advantage of a full steam train service and enjoy a ride in one of the beautifully restored vintage carriages.

The station restaurant will be open for breakfast from 10.00am and the gift shop will be open throughout the weekend.

The stations at Northiam and Bodiam each host a variety of displays and entertainment. Admission: Adult £17, Child (3 – 15 years inc.) £12 and Family (2 adults + up to 3 children or 1 adult and up to 4 children) £50. Please see the timetable on the website for times of steam train operation.
